Hatch Space, 伦敦 / Hatch Space, London
Press Release by Guo Wei & Chloé Hipeau:
Sometimes we are facing the future, whilst at the same time glancing to the past. Such experiences might have happened at The Great Exhibition, which took place in London in 1851, and the World Expo which took place in Shanghai in 2010. In both instances, people were exposed to new technologies and cultural and historical heritage at the same time. Dealing with the question of what could be waiting ahead and what has gone before in history, is just like traveling through time and space. In today’s Chinese cyber space, we call it “Transcend”.
The two emerging artists Tianzhuo Chen and Xinyi Liu both come from China and have been living and working in London for a number of years. Traveling between UK and China has given both artists relevant experience of “transcend”. The rapid environmental changes blur the nomads’ acknowledgement of their realities, physically and also psychologically. The Great Exhibition has been curated to encourage the two artists to work with their chosen individual subject matter by referencing the idea and exploring the potential of “Transcend”, in the field of contemporary art production.
In the work of the two artists, the audience may find themselves standing at the time when the very first World Expo (1851) took place in London. The curators want to give the audience the experience of “Transcend”, which like you can see in the future and the past all over the world, and this can instill within the audience the feeling of the impact of globalization.
